Overview
Visa and Mastercard have introduced a mandate around EMV contactless support on terminals within Europe. This article goes into the details of this mandate and how this affects customers using NMI's Gateway.
Mandate
EMV Contactless mandate from Visa:
With effect from 31 December 2019, all Visa terminals deployed must accept contactless payments.
This mandate affects all face-to-face, semi-attended, and unattended terminals (including Mobile Acceptance Terminals, otherwise known as mobile point-of-sale or mPOS) where they are installed at a fixed merchant location.
Mobile Acceptance Terminals deployed in non-fixed merchant locations, automated fuel dispenser (AFD), ATM, and bank branch terminals (for identification and validation purposes) are excluded from this mandate.
These changes do not apply to Visa Europe markets which have previously introduced contactless acceptance mandates: Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia, and Hungary.
EMV Contactless mandate from Mastercard:
With effect from 1st of January 2020, all POS terminals in Europe must include contactless functionality as a standard offer, unless a different date has been announced at country level.
What do I need to do?
All merchants in Europe (except where exclusions and waivers apply) must ensure that their payment solution is capable of accepting EMV contactless payments. If your currently deployed solution is capable of EMV contactless but is not enabled please ensure you reach out to NMI support at support@creditcall.com for assistance.
Alternatively, if your current solution is not capable of supporting EMV contactless please reach out to your account manager who will be happy to assist you in finding an alternative solution.
How does it affect me?
As of the dates outlined above, all terminals deployed must accept contactless payments. If you have any questions regarding deployment timelines or seek to request a waiver please ensure you reach out to your merchant account provider for more information.
