Overview
Mastercard has introduced a new requirement for acquirers to include a Merchant Payment Gateway ID (MPG ID) in certain transaction types. This is part of an effort to improve transaction performance and fraud monitoring at a more granular level.
No action is required from our partners or merchants.
What Is the MPG ID?
The Merchant Payment Gateway ID (MPG ID) is a unique identifier assigned to a payment gateway that:
- Sends transaction data from a merchant (or sub-merchant via a payment facilitator) to the acquiring bank.
- May also capture and transmit card information and transaction data for authorization requests.
- Is ultimately responsible for transmitting the authorization request to the acquirer.
If multiple gateways are involved, the MPG ID should reflect the final gateway that sends the data to the acquirer.
Mastercard Requirement Summary
Mastercard is mandating the inclusion of the MPG ID for:
- Card-not-present (CNP)/E-commerce transactions
- Credential-on-file transactions
Excludes mail order/telephone order (MO/TO) transactions
This requirement aims to help Mastercard:
- Monitor and improve gateway-level approval and fraud performance
- Enable direct collaboration with gateways to resolve issues
- Enhance overall ecosystem compliance and performance
What This Means for You
- No changes are required on your side
- No configuration or technical updates are needed
- The MPG ID is handled directly by NMI and/or the processor
We are implementing this as part of our strategic integrations to meet Mastercard’s standards and ensure optimal performance for all transactions involving Mastercard.
